The premise of Bye Bye Birdie was inspired by Elvis Presley receiving his draft notice in 1957. In the musical, teen idol Conrad Birdie is drafted by the US Army to the dismay of his fan base. Albert Peterson, an unsuccessful songwriter, pens a song for Conrad to sing to one lucky fan before he leaves. All-American girl, Kim MacAfee, is chosen. However, the lucky fan has a jealous boyfriend who is not too excited about Conrad coming to town.
