Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

At Cotter Schools, the safety of our students and staff is a top priority. To support a secure and prepared school environment, Cotter Schools uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation.
The SRP provides a clear, consistent, and easily understood framework for responding to a variety of school safety situations. It focuses on five simple actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.
Each action is clearly defined and practiced throughout the school year so that students, staff, and families know what to do should an emergency arise.
SRP Actions

Hold
Students remain in their classrooms while the hallways are kept clear. This may be used for situations like a medical emergency in the hallway.

Secure
The building’s perimeter is secured. Students and staff continue business as usual inside the building, but no one enters or exits until given the all-clear.

Lockdown
All classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and students remain out of sight and silent. This is used to protect against threats inside the building.

Evacuate
Students and staff move to a designated safe location away from the building.

Shelter
Students and staff take shelter indoors, following specific safety strategies for events such as severe weather or hazardous materials.
Training and Communication
Cotter Schools regularly trains students and staff on the SRP actions through age-appropriate lessons and drills. In the event that an SRP action is activated, families will be notified through our established communication channels as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
We encourage families to familiarize themselves with the SRP and talk with their students about the importance of following directions during drills and real emergencies.
